UAE schools offer up to 50% off fees in scholarships; top grades not mandatory

School fees can be one of the biggest expenses for families in the UAE, particularly as children move into higher year groups. However, parents may have more options than they realise when it comes to reducing tuition costs.

Across the UAE, a growing number of schools are introducing or expanding scholarship programmes for students with strengths in different areas. Academic results still matter in many cases, but they are no longer the only factor schools consider.

Students with strong sporting abilities, musical or artistic talent, leadership qualities or a positive attitude towards school life may also be considered for financial awards.

Scholarships are becoming more diverse

The beginning of the 2026-27 academic year has put renewed attention on school scholarship programmes, particularly for students approaching important transition years.

Rather than focusing exclusively on examination results, schools are increasingly looking at the broader profile of each applicant. This can include achievements outside the classroom, personal qualities and the contribution a student could make to the school community.

At Arcadia British School, for example, scholarship opportunities are mainly available at Years 7, 10 and 12. These points correspond with important stages in a student's education.

The school's awards cover several categories, including academic performance, sport and performing arts.

Character can matter as much as results

One of the noticeable changes in scholarship selection is the attention given to qualities beyond grades.

Schools are increasingly interested in students who show initiative, confidence, determination and leadership potential. A student's ability to participate positively in school life can therefore become an important part of the application.

Sporting applicants may be expected to demonstrate achievements beyond their school team, while students applying through performing arts programmes may be assessed in areas such as music, dance or drama.

This broader approach means that students who may not have perfect academic results could still have an opportunity if they demonstrate exceptional ability elsewhere.

Different schools have different requirements

Scholarship programmes are not identical across the UAE. Eligibility, assessment methods, year groups and the amount of financial support can vary considerably from one school to another.

Regent International School, for example, offers merit-based opportunities across selected year groups. The school considers academic achievement as well as areas such as sport, music, performing arts and leadership.

Both current students and children applying to join the school may be eligible for certain awards, although the assessment process depends on the specific scholarship.

Parents should also pay attention to what a scholarship actually covers. Tuition support may not include expenses such as transport, uniforms, examination charges or extracurricular activities.

Large school groups are widening the choice

Gems Education also provides several scholarship pathways for students with different strengths.

Its programmes include opportunities for both current Gems students and students applying from other schools. Some scholarships are designed for particular groups, while others are available to students of different nationalities.

The Gems Genius Scholarship, for example, is available to eligible students entering Year 10/Grade 9 and Year 12/Grade 11 for the 2027 academic year. Applications are scheduled to open in October 2026, with successful students receiving support for two years.

The education group says it supports hundreds of students through its various scholarship routes each academic year.

Some awards are designed around specific talents

Not every scholarship is aimed at students seeking large reductions in tuition fees.

Rugby School Dubai offers partial scholarships for students entering Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12. The standard awards typically cover a portion of annual tuition fees and are reviewed periodically.

Beyond the financial element, scholarship students may receive additional opportunities such as mentoring, enrichment activities and leadership development.

The school also offers the Ruwad al Emarat Scholarship for Emirati students, providing a much larger contribution towards fees for eligible students from Years 4 to 13.

New schools are creating their own programmes

Newly established schools are also developing scholarship systems as they build their communities.

Queen Elizabeth’s School in Dubai Sports City is still shaping its scholarship programme. The school says it intends to consider more than academic results when assessing potential candidates.

Strengths, personal qualities and the potential to contribute to school life are expected to form part of the selection process, with awards being developed for several year groups.

How much could families save?

The amount of support available depends heavily on the school and the specific award, but the difference can be substantial.

At some schools, partial scholarships can reduce annual tuition by around 10 per cent to 25 per cent. This can already represent meaningful savings for families paying school fees over several years.

The most notable opportunities go considerably further.

At Arcadia British School, awards for Years 7 and 10 can reach up to 25 per cent of fees, while a limited number of exceptional Year 12 students may qualify for awards of up to 50 per cent.

Rugby School Dubai generally offers scholarships covering up to 10 per cent of annual tuition, while its Ruwad al Emarat Scholarship provides eligible Emirati students with 50 per cent fee support.

These figures show why parents should not assume that scholarships are reserved exclusively for students with the highest examination scores.

What parents should check before applying

Before submitting an application, families should carefully review the school's eligibility rules and application timetable.

It is worth checking which year groups are eligible, whether existing students can apply, what achievements are required and whether an assessment or audition is involved.

Parents should also look beyond the headline percentage and confirm exactly which costs are included in the award.

Most importantly, students should identify the area in which they have the strongest profile. A child with excellent sporting achievements may be better suited to a sports scholarship, while another student could have a stronger application through music, performing arts, leadership or academic performance.

With schools across the UAE broadening the definition of student achievement, scholarship opportunities are no longer limited to one type of student. For families planning ahead for the next academic year, checking these programmes early could reveal valuable opportunities to reduce tuition costs while giving talented students additional ways to develop within their school community.
